Remote Work & Home Business
Working from home blurs a line that used to be clear: your home network is now also your office network. If you run a small business or handle client data from home, a few deliberate habits go a long way toward protecting both your work and your family’s devices.
Setting Up a Secure Home Office
Start by separating work from personal wherever you reasonably can: a separate user account or even a separate device for work reduces the chance that a compromised personal app puts business files at risk. Keep your operating system and antivirus software up to date and turned on, use a locking screensaver so a laptop left open in a shared space doesn’t expose client data, and back up important work files automatically, not just “when you remember to.”
Managing Passwords for Your Business
The habits that matter for personal accounts matter even more for business ones, because a breach affects clients, not just you. Use a password manager built for teams if you have employees or contractors, so credentials can be shared securely and revoked instantly if someone leaves. Turn on two-factor authentication for anything tied to money or client data — your email, banking, invoicing, and any cloud storage accounts.
Protecting Customer and Client Data
If you store any customer information — names, emails, payment details — treat it as a responsibility, not just a convenience. Only collect what you actually need, use a reputable payment processor instead of handling card numbers yourself, and encrypt or password-protect any spreadsheets or documents containing customer details. If you ever do experience a data exposure, most states require notifying affected customers — it’s worth knowing that obligation before you need it.
Video Calls and File Sharing
Use waiting rooms or passcodes on video meetings so uninvited guests can’t join, and double-check sharing settings before sending a cloud storage link — “anyone with the link” is convenient but means the file is effectively public. When sharing sensitive documents, prefer a link that expires or requires a login over an email attachment that lives in someone’s inbox forever.
